Eric Muller

Eric Muller, Dan K. Moore Distinguished Professor of Law in Jurisprudence and Ethics, was honored by the Western History Association as the 2013 Joan Patterson Kerr Award recipient for his book “Colors of Confinement: Rare Kodachrome Photographs of Japanese American Incarceration in World War II” (UNC Press, 2012). The Joan Patterson Kerr Award is given biennially for the best illustrated book on the American West.

In the book, Muller showcases 65 stunning photos from an extremely rare collection of color images taken in the early 1940s by Bill Manbo, a Japanese American internee at the Heart Mountain Relocation Center in Wyoming. The photos are presented along with interpretive essays by leading scholars and a personal essay by another former internee.

The book was published to critical praise, including feature stories by the New York Times and National Public Radio. Read an interview with Muller about the book.
